An offline maintenance app for a Pilbara mine site

Maintenance crews recorded inspections on paper because the old app needed a signal. We built an offline-first app that works for a whole shift without a connection and syncs when a link appears.

The situation

No signal, so no app.

Connectivity across the site was patchy and the existing app could not save a form without it. Crews went back to paper, and inspection data reached the asset system days later, if at all.

We spent two rotations on site with the crews before designing a screen.

Before and after

Before

  • Paper forms, keyed in later
  • Photos on personal phones
  • Defects reported at shift end

After

  • Forms saved on the tablet, synced automatically
  • Photos attached to the work order
  • Defects visible to planners as soon as a link appears
